about

I fell in love with this song because of Big Mama Thornton. She was literally a birthing mother of
the blues, and when I was told by Queenie McCarter-Wade to study some of the greats, she
was one that I picked. This song is about being a black woman who was hardly ever allowed to
go to the bar and have a drink after her shows. Most of the time she would have to fight even to
get paid after singing 2-5 hours without any long breaks. As soon as she was allowed to go to
the bar and have her gin, prohibition took place and they started dumping all the liquor in the
streets. This song symbolized life for a poor woman for me, and that feeling of how could this
honestly get any worse? Although I can never really understand the kinds of things Big Mama
had to endure, I can most certainly relate. I was happy to bring this song back to life in a
traditional blues style.
